Located on a gently sloping plot in the area of Vardania, Lefkada, the Ribbon House project comprises two private residences of 160 m² and 40 m² respectively. The placement of the buildings within the site emerges from a desire to achieve a balance between privacy and openness to the landscape. The two houses are positioned to form a shared outdoor living zone towards the south, where water features act as both cooling elements and visual focal points.
The architectural concept is structured around a continuous concrete ribbon that wraps around and defines the interior functions of each residence. This sculptural envelope forms a fluid spatial gesture, allowing for large openings to the south that invite natural light deep into the interior and establish a strong dialogue between inside and outside. The concrete mantle is complemented by stone volumes and light steel structures, creating a play between solidity and transparency, heaviness and lightness.
In the larger residence, the concrete ribbon encloses the ground-floor bedrooms and connects with a two-storey stone volume that accommodates the living and kitchen areas, forming the heart of the house. In the smaller dwelling, the ribbon embraces the entirety of the program, while in both cases light mezzanine levels host bedroom spaces overlooking the surrounding landscape and water surfaces.
The landscape design reinforces the project’s relationship with nature. Dense planting along the perimeter ensures privacy, while natural materials and water elements create a calm, sheltered atmosphere. Existing olive trees were preserved and became an integral part of the composition — the built form is perforated at certain points, allowing the trees to grow through the architecture. In this way, the project establishes a harmonious coexistence between architecture and nature, emphasizing a spatial experience that is at once private, open, and deeply rooted in its Mediterranean context.
